Social media electioneering

With latest and widely shared post on facebook that carries the message: “We want a democratic demand between Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan” and dozens of other interesting political slogans, chit chat, criticism, favoritism, liking, disliking and comments, the social media has been playing an appealing and vital role in election 2013.
Though the PTI has introduced the trend of using social media for attracting and motivating masses, the PML-N, PPP, MQM and JI are emerging vibrantly on Facebook and Twitter.
Around 15 million countrymen majority of young are using Facebook and Twitter in Pakistan. There is 70:30 ratio of male, female user of social media.
Interestingly, Election Commission of Pakistan so far has not issued any direction for the political campaign on social media which results in different reactions among the supporters of political parties on seeing harsh or sarcastic comments.
Amongst the prominent politicians on social media include: PTI’s Shaufqat Mehmood, Jahangir Tareen, Asad Umar; PML-N’s Shahbaz Sharif Mariam Nawaz, Marvi Memon, Khurram Dastigir, PPP’s Shirmela Farooqi, Faisel Raza Abdi, MQM’s Faisel Sabzwari, Haider Abbad Rizvi, JI’s Munawar Hassan, Liaqat Baloch and Sirajul Haq. 
“Yes, Twitter is being used for political campaigns in a way never seen before” said a social media user.
PTI Chief Imran Khan is the most popular politicians and has more followers than any other politicians of the country on Twitter and Facebook.
