$26m okayed for Thar Coal Project

KARACHI - Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, who is also Chairman Thar Coal and Energy Board (TCEB), has approved the Technical Assistance Programme of World Bank worth $26 million in a meeting of TECB board held at CM House on Saturday. According to a handout issued from CM House stated that the second meeting of the board, chaired by the CM, had approved the Technical Assistance Programme of World Bank worth $26 million. The details will be finalised soon. The World Bank team is currently on tour of Pakistan and matters are to be finalised during negotiations. The meeting discussed matter pertaining to development of schemes of Thar Coal and Power Plant. Sindh Secretary for Mines and mineral Development Muhammad Younis Dhaga gave briefing on World Bank's Sindh Coal and Power Technical Assistance Project which included World Bank's strategic context for coal, basis of design, objectives of the project, description of project and timelines (schedule) for major activities of project from November 2008 to December 2009. The Board also decided to hold Second Investors Round Table Conference at Hong Kong or Dubai very soon. It was also decided that the meeting of Board would be regularly held every month. The CM stressed the need to accelerate pace of work on project to resolve the ongoing loadshedding crisis in the province. Sindh Revenue Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Sindh Irrigation and Power Minister Jam Saifullah Dharejo, Advisor to CM for Mines and Mineral Development Khatoomal Jewan, Chief Secretary Sindh Fazalur Rehman, Federal Secretary Water and Power Muhammad Ismail Qureshi, Secretary Mines and Mineral Development Yunus Dhaga, Managing Director Thar Coal and Power Plant Muhammad Aslam Sanjrani, Secretary to CM Sohail Akbar Shah and others also attended the meeting.
