LAHORE- PIA new Managing Director is likely to be announced on coming Wednesday since Supreme Court of Pakistan has directed Pakistan government to appoint heads of all state corporations, said sources in the national flag carrier here.
Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif will be briefed on Aviation issues within this week by secretary Aviation Division and other senior officers of airlines. A senior officer of PIA seeking anonymity said that agenda of the briefing would be bailout package, appointment of head of PIA and procurement of new planes.
Sources claimed that Government has constituted a cell in the Cabinet division headed by Shamas Qasim Lakha while Ijaz Nabi and Rauf Ch. senior bureaucrats are its members. This cell will finalise recruitment process of head of the corporations. Sources said that Supreme Court has stopped government to directly appoint the heads of the corporations rather it would be made through a transparent process.
As per process an advertisement in the press was mandatory for the appointment of MD of all state-owned corporations. Applications would be sought; there would be short listing of applications and then process of interview would be started.
There was strong perception among the aviation circles that Shahid Islam was the strongest candidate for the slot of MD PIA.
It is worth mentioning here that about 100 candidates have applied for said office but majority of the senior aviation officers were more than 57 years age due to which their names would be short listed. Shahid Islam had served as MD PIA in the previous government of Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, then he remained Director Finance in PIA. He is Chartered Accountant qualified.
