LAHORE - Tareen Mental Health Foundation (TMHF) and Al Mustafa Welfare Trust International have organised a peaceful walk in connection with the World Disability Day here on Monday at outside the Lahore Press Club.
Renowned psychiatrist and President TMHF Prof Dr IAK Tareen led the event while President Al Mustafa Welfare Society Lahore Mian Khalid Habib Elahi Advocate, parents, teachers and people from different walk of life also attended the walk to express solidarity with disabled persons. A large number of children with learning disability also participated in the walk. Addressing the participants, Prof Dr IAK Tareen said that there was no mental health act in Punjab and mentally disabled people have no rights and protection in society. He said that initially mental health act was a federal subject but now the subject of health is assigned to provinces, so now provincial governments should take steps to improve and implement Mental Health Act since Sindh government has already issued notification for the new Mental Health Act.
Chairman Al Mustafa Welfare Trust International Abdul Razzaq Sajid said that they are holding largest free eye camps campaign in the country and had performed over 10,000 cataract surgeries this year. He said government should implement the two percent job quota for disabled persons in public institutions and Punjab government should fulfil all vacancies for disabled persons in provincial departments.
Mian Khalid Habib Elahi Advocate said that we should avoid the discrimination attitude toward disabled people and change our behaviour because Islam teaches us to care and respect the rights of disabled people.
