Passco establishes 337 centres for wheat procurement

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The wheat procurement supervisory committee here on Wednesday reviewed the arrangements for achieving the wheat procurement target of 6.5 million tons. The meeting of the committee was held under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture, Nazar Muhammad Gondal. The committee was formed, as directed by the Prime Minister, under Federal Food and Agriculture Minister having Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, Minister of State for Economic Affairs Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar and Industries Minister Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo as its members. The committee was briefed by Provincial Food secretaries and MD Passco on the arrangements for wheat procurement. The Committee was told that Passco has formed 337 centres for procurement of 1.2 millions tons of wheat and all the arrangements would be finalised till the middle of this month. It was also informed that Punjab government was planning to give toll free telephone numbers and form complaint centres for any complaint regarding procurement. Speaking on the occasion, the Nazar Muhammad Gondal said that the government was committed to ensure wheat growers get the announced wheat support price. He said that in addition to public sector, the private sector is being encouraged to procure wheat from growers to facilitate the farmers. Gondal warned that no inefficiency and mismanagement would be tolerated in procurement and inspection teams would conduct surprise visits to procurement centres. The Minister directed all the government agencies responsible for procurement to remain in field till the procurement of last grain. On the occasion, the committee showed satisfaction on availability of Bardana and other necessary arrangements.
