FBS to release inflation statistics

LAHORE - Federal Bureau of Statistics is expected to shortly release July 2008 CPI inflation numbers, which, the annalists believe, are likely to further highlight the serious inflationary concerns currently gripping the economy. They expect that last month CPI to stay in the range of 23-24 percent with its highest level in nearly 3 decades. Accordingly, full year FY09 CPI is expected to end up in the range of 19-20 percent, well above fiscal 2008 CPI of 12 percent. They said that the inflationary pressures, in recent times have been widely dictated by rising food prices, which has been a global phenomenon. The surge in CPI during second half Jan-Jun this year, was largely driven by higher food prices (40 percent weight in CPI) which rose by an average of 23.5 percent on year on year basis. They expect this trend to continue in July FY09 with added momentum provided by the rising fuel and energy prices in recent weeks.
