Gas cos, industrial sector move for SNG tech

lahore - After successful provision of SNG, the mixture of natural gas and air to the consumers of Gwadar city for the last 4 years, the natural gas producing companies and industrial sector have shown their interest in obtaining Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) technology. Head of SNG providing company in Pakistan M/s Dynamic Engineering and Automation, Owais Mir, said that installation cost of SNG plant is 6 times lesser than LNG plant whereas the cost of one MMBTU SNG is 25 to 30 % lesser than LNG. He said in view of the limited existing reserves of natural gas in the country, the local gas requirements could be met in very short time period by promoting SNG Technology. At present natural gas providers are facing a shortage of 500 to 700 MMCFD of gas, which during the winter tolls to 1000 MMCFD. In Gawader through SNG technology 60 MMBTU gas per hour is being produced and successfully transmitted to the consumers. Moreover, textile and ceramic tile industry have already started having the benefit of SNG as an alternative source of energy. SNG technology may play an important role to over-come the energy crisis, prevailing for the last 2 years, he said. He proposed that for further reducing the cost of gas being obtained through SNG Technology the Government, other than increasing the local production of LPG should find ways and means for competitive long term import contracts from neighbouring countries and lifting of 16% sales tax levied upon import of LPG. Because of state of art infrastructure available at Pakistani ports the import of LPG is further positive for SNG project anda huge level of import is possible. He maintained that by promoting SNG technology in Pakistan the in-time completion / compliance of export orders will be possible whereas the possibilities of cancellation of export orders by the foreign buyers may also be eliminated. Answering a question, he said that SNG Technology is about 100- years- old technology whereas in Pakistan 30 years before due to non- provision of natural gas to Larkana and Quetta the respective Gas Company had been providing gas through SNG Technology to the gas consumers of these cities for more than 10 years. Presently for the last 4 years consumers of Gawader city are getting the gas because of SNG Technology in an efficient and effective manner. He informed that the developing countries like Argentina, Brazil, Chile etc., are managing their natural gas shortage through SNG technology. In Pakistan, Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has also invited bids for such system which will be a milestone in fulfilling the requirement of natural gas in the country.
