ISLAMABAD (APP) - The newly appointed Chairperson of Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) Ms Rahat Kaunain Hassan has vowed to focus on implementing competition laws and strengthening the institution for promotion of fair business practices. Enforcement of law without fear and favour would be her top priority besides ensuring the credibility of her organization, she told a group of journalists here adding the commission would act against abuse of dominance and cartelisation for prosperity of the country. She said that her appointment has been widely appreciated and well received both domestically and internationally. My priority would be in accordance with the mandate that I am given to provide and promote free competition, to enhance economic efficiency, enforcement of law-without fear and favour and apply the law equally, Ms. Rahat remarked. Ms.Rahat appreciated the services of her predecessor Khalid Mirza for the strengthening the CCP and termed him as a giant for the institution. She expressed her defemination to follow his footprints and take the institution to new heights and make it a strong and credible public service institution for promoting fair business practices for the prosperity of the country. She said that the role of CCP would be like an umpire or referee and would work for providing a level playing field for the promotion of fair business practices according to the international standards. Replying to a question, she said that CCP law has been approved by the Senate and expressed the hope that National Assembly would also pass the bill by August 15 and before the expiry of the Competition Ordinance. I have been assured of support by the government and I am hopeful that the uncertainty regarding the law shall be soon dispelled, she remarked. To a question, Ms. Rahat said that the regulators have to pay 3 percent of their penalty fees to the commission adding that negotiations are going smoothly with the regulators in this regard. She said that Finance Ministry was providing funding to the CCP to function smoothly.
