ISLAMABAD (APP) - The shortage of around 60 locomotives is the major cause for stoppage of some train services, while more trains could be stopped for the same reason. An official of the ministry of Railways informed APP that all out efforts were being made by the Railways Ministry to revive Pakistan Railways. The previous government had purchased 59 locomotives from a Chinese company. Out of those some engines are out of order. We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese company and soon parts would be available to reactivate the out of order locomatives, he added. Referring to the purchase of locomotives, the oficial said the government had preferred a Chinese company which was providing locomotives on cheaper rates. The US company filed a bid at US$ 227 million while the Chinese firm had offered the bid at US$ 127. So the ministry chose the lowest bidder. The official said the government was in touch with the US firm for purchase of new locomotives. He regretted that the past regimes had preferred investment on motorways while neither any new track had been laid nor the incumbent tracks were improved. The official further said that the govt would establish rail link from Khunjrab to Gawader with Chinese cooperation. While proposals have been made for establishing railway link with Turkey via Iran which would later be extended to Europe. He said that feasilility reports were under process for establishment of Chaman-Kandahar and Peshawar-Jalalabad railway links.
