Canada adds 26,000 jobs in May

OTTAWA -Canada added 26,000 mostly part-time jobs in May, but the unemployment rate still edged up to 7 percent as more people entered the labor force, the government said Friday. Employment gains have been “subdued” since mid-2013, Statistics Canada said. In the 12 months to May, a mere 86,000 jobs were created — all part-time — in a country of 35 million people. Oil-rich Alberta province saw an increase in employment last month while the island province of Newfoundland experienced job losses. There were more people working in educational services, accommodation and food services, as well as in agriculture in May.  But there were fewer people working in natural resources, as well as in finance, insurance, real estate and leasing.
The number of public sector employees increased in the month, mainly because of more employment in educational services, while there was little change in the number of private sector employees and fewer self-employed individuals.
