KARACHI - Federal Minister Ports and Shipping Babar Khan Ghouri has said the S3 project is to be started on fast track basis besides some other major initiatives to curb sea pollution. He said this while giving a briefing to the media after the 2nd meeting of Marine Pollution Control Board (MPCB), adding that this S3 project with the help of Water Board, Navy, Air force, City Government, Karachi Port Trust, Defence Housing Authority, Federal and Sindh Governments, would surely produce desired results. He said besides the execution of S3 project some major decisions have been taken in the meeting like ban on plastic bags, to fine the industries causing pollution, to create awareness among the masses about sea pollution and to organise beach cleaning activities. He said the level of pollution has increased in the coastal belt of the city as some 13 sewerage nullahs have been identified that are polluting the sea water. The Ministry of Environment would issue notices to these industries while legislation would also be done in this regard, he added. The fishing trawlers would also face fines if they found splitting oil in the sea, and KPT would monitor the OPRC complaint of the oil terminals, he said. He informed that S3 is a Rs 8 billion project in which KPT has 33 percent share and rest is to be borne by other stakeholders. However, the ports are to be modernised and Pakistan would attend all the international conventions related to maritime industry. Director General Ports and Shipping Syed Afzal Hyder, Chairperson KPT Nasreen Haque, Secretary Ministry of Environment and others were also present on the occasion.
