CPI-based inflation up 19.07 per cent in March

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The Consumers Price Indicator (CPI), Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) and Wholesale Price Indicator (WPI) in March 2009 increased by 19.07 percent, 20.10 percent and 11.08 percent against March 2008 respectively. The inflation rates based on CPI, SPI and WPI in March 2009 increased by 1.37 percent, 0.64 percent and 0.42 percent over February 2009 respectively, according to Federal Bureau of Statistics figures. However, the inflation rates based on CPI, SPI and WPI during July-March (2008-09) increased by 22.97 percent 27.64 percent and 23.07 percent respectively as against the corresponding period of last fiscal year. During March 2009, prices of onion were increased by 60.86 percent as against February 2009. Similarly, as against February 2009, prices of fresh fruits increased 12.85 percent, vegetables by 8.61 percent, chicken farm by 5.34 percent, tomatoes by 4.74 percent, sugar by 3.68 percent, cigarettes by 3.13 percent, readymade food by 1.40 percent, meat by 1.26 percent, gur by 1.24 percent, milk fresh by 1.11 percent, sweetmeat and nimco by 1.09 percent and jam, tomato, pickles and vinegar by 1.04 percent , Bulb and tube by 8.38 percent while prices of firewood increased by 1.21 percent in March 2009. Similarly the prices of household equipments increased by 3.42 percent, refrigerator and Airconditioner by 1.34 percent and marriage hall by 0.96 percent, service charges by 1.34 percent and tyre and tube by 0.63 percent During the month, the stationery prices increased by 2.23 percent, text books prices by 1.15 percent, cosmetics by 2.95 percent, Jewellery by 2.45 percent, shaving articles by 0.93 percent, washing soap and detergent by 0.88 percent and hair cut and beauty parlour charges by 0.79 percent. On the other hand, prices of Potatoes decreased by 9.98, pulse gram by 9.31, besan by 6.57 percent, pulse masoor by 5.37 percent, mustard oil by 3.41 percent, rice by 2.80 percent, fish by 2.78 percent, gram whole by 2.01 percent, maida by 1.86 percent, pulse moong by 1.76 percent, eggs by 1.41 percent, wheat by 1.31 percent, where as prices of Gas cylinder increased by 1.01 percent during March 2009 as against February 2009.
