CPI-based inflation at 14.33pc

ISLAMABAD The inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 12.91 per cent in February 2011 as compared to the same period of last year. According to the figures of Federal Bureau of Statistics (FBS), the inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) was registered at 12.91 per cent in February over the corresponding month of the previous year. Meanwhile, the inflation based on Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) was recorded at 16.81 per cent and Wholesales Price Index (WPI) based inflation increased by 24.43 per cent. According to the FBS data, the CPI-based inflation had decreased by 0.74 per cent in February as compared to the figures of January, and SPI-based inflation also declined by 1.13 per cent, however, the WPI increased by 1.87 per cent in February over January. Meanwhile, in the first eight months (July-Feb) of the current fiscal year 2010-11, the CPI-based inflation was recorded at 14.33 per cent as compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year. At the same time, the SPI-based inflation was registered at 18.88 per cent and the WPI-based inflation at 22.64 per cent in the period under review. The break-up of CPI-based general inflation (12.91 per cent in February 2011) illustrated that food inflation went up by 17.72 per cent, apparel, textile and footwear prices soared by 28.08 per cent in February 2011 over the same period of the last year. Similarly, house rents were increased by 6.52 per cent, fuel prices by 9.05 per cent, household, furniture and equipment by 10.73 per cent, recreation and entertainment by 10.50 per cent, education by 5.25 per cent, cleaning and laundry rates by 10.38 per cent and Medicare rates shot up by 16.30 per cent, while transport and communication went up by 12.31 per cent.
