LAHORE - The Punjab industry has shown grave concern over suspension of gas to the industry and feared massive layoffs and unrest.
The Pakistan Steel Re-Rolling Mills Association as well as the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association stated that it was very unfortunate that industry in Punjab has no gas supply whereas Karachi has only two holidays and no holiday for KPK province. Ultimately products manufactured in other provinces are ruining industry in Punjab. Chairman APTMA Punjab S M Tanveer has said that the industry has rationalized its demand for gas during winter to 100MMCFD against actual demand of 450MMCFD while understanding the compulsion of the government on gas supply.
However, still, he said, the SNGPL has suspended gas supply to the textile industry in Punjab, likely to cause $1.3 billion per month export loss.
, retrenchment of 3 million workers and loss of opportunity arising out of much-likely GSP plus status from the EU.
He was addressing a press conference at the APTMA Punjab office along with Adil Bashir, Treasurer APTMA Punjab and Ali Pervez, Member Gas Committee APTMA Punjab. He said the industry was under an impression that the hourly-based gas supply will continue for next three months but the SNGPL has suddenly decided to cut off gas supply to textile mills that has resulted into a crisis like situation.
