Lahore Speakers have called for tangible steps to resolve the issues of fast emerging pollution problems and plastic disposal. Speaking at a seminar on Oxo-biodegradable Plastic Technology and Global Warming here at Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry on Thursday, the LCCI President Shahzad Ali Malik said that there was a dire need to create awareness among the masses and anything hurting the environment must be taken seriously as collective responsibility. Other speakers include LCCI Senior Vice President Sheikh Mohammad Arshad, Convener LCCI Standing Committee on Environment Agha Saiddain, Executive Director Business Dynamics Khalid Hameed, Director General Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Asif Shuja Khan, Director General Punjab EPA Dr. Shagufta, LCCI former EC Members Anwaar A. Sheikh and Rehmatullah Javed. The LCCI President said that the entire developed world had very strict environmental standards and for doing business with the world, the Pakistans business community would have to establish environment compliant regime. Shahzad Ali Malik while calling for wholesome measures to protect the ecosystem, said that with some awareness and education of the manufacturers, the Oxo-biodegradable technology can be adopted at a larger scale as it is quite flexible and can be compatible with the conventional processes. He said that the research has proven that one centigrade increase in temperature cuts grain production by 10 percent. He said that the traditional technology being used to produce plastic products is playing havoc as the products last for years to come and consequently generates garbage that creates a solid layer on the surface of the earth and causing serious repercussions in terms of environmental hazards.
