PKMA demands deletion of items from cross-LoC trade list

KARACHI - A huge quantity of coconut, big cardamom, coriander seeds and turmeric is coming into the local markets illegally, reportedly through Cross-LoC trade, The Nation has learnt. It was learnt that these daily-use items are making their way into the local markets on the plea that they are being produced or cultivated, in parts of Kashmir. Whereas in fact, none of these items are cultivated or produced in any part of Kashmir and are being brought clandestinely into Pakistan from parts of India. It is also learnt that perpetrators have already started working on other commodities such as black pepper, white pepper, nutmeg, cashew nuts and seed lac. It is quite ironic that these items or commodities that are not even produced in any part of Kashmir, are featured in the official list for Cross-LoC trade. Such illegal trade is not only causing huge revenue loss to the government, which is going to be in billions of rupees, but also diverting traders of Karachi and Lahore to leave legal channel of import and use this channel. Considering such issue, Pakistan Kiryana Merchants Association (PKMA) demanded the government that the name of said Kiryana items should be excluded from Cross-LoC trade items/commodities list so that illegal smuggling of these items could be stopped.
