Shortfall hits 3,900MW as fuel crisis worsens

OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE Only after two weeks of non-stop electricity supply to the consumers, Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) has once again started 8-10 hours loadshedding in all parts of the country The national grid, which had faced a shortfall of 2,280MW on Sunday, faced a shortfall of 3900MW on Monday as generation was only 10100MW against the demand of 14000MW, the official sourced told TheNation. Sources said that major power plants including HUBCO, KEPCO, Oreint, Jamshoro, Muzaffar Garh faced the problem of severs fuel shortages and resultantly distribution companies were compelled to conduct eight hours loadshedding in major cities while the rural areas saw power breakdowns of up to 10 hours. Amid this situation, PEPCO Managing Director Rasul Khan Mahsud has urged CEOs of all DISCOs to take all possible measures to overcome the energy crisis. The PEPCO MD also appraised the CEOs about the instructions of President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani regarding steps to implement all the projects in pipeline, during the energy meeting held at the presidency at Islamabad. A PEPCO statement issued on Monday stated that the MD stressed to take stringent action against defaulters along with ensuring recoveries and ending power theft. Presiding over a meeting of CEOs of distribution companies at WAPDA House Lahore, PEPCO MD said that PEPCO was making 'special efforts to reduce line losses and eliminate electricity theft through concerted efforts. The PEPCO MD instructed CEOs that the load system should be managed against the demand versus supply to meet present and future needs. He urged comprehensive plan for augmentation, enhancement and modernization of distribution system on a priority basis. Officials must give importance to consumers satisfaction while evaluating the performance of all departments, he said. Rasul Khan Mahsud also asserted that the staff of distribution companies should adopt positive, consumer-friendly and focused approach to bring out a qualitative and quantitative improvement in their respective companies. During the meeting, CEOs of distribution companies gave presentations on overall performance and future targets of the companies. The PEPCO MD also reviewed the progress, recovery and arrears of permanent and running defaulters/consumers including private and government connections.
