LAHORE The seventh LCCI Achievement Awards 2011,which was graced by the PM for fourth time consecutively and attended by a large number of the businessmen, government functionaries, politicians, diplomats and bureaucrats, was marred by a absolute mismanagement. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who was to reach the venue of the function at 5.30pm, arrived too late. The audience was passionately waiting for their chief guest, as the time of the iftar was approaching swiftly. Keeping in mind the short time the PM was just managing to conclude his speech, but the time of breaking fast approached. So, the PM quickly stopped his address while some of the audience broke their fast with mineral water and the remaining majority rushed to the hall where the iftar/dinner was arranged. The LCCI could not arrange the iftar/dinner in a proper way as shortage of several food items left several attendees without any food. The management arranged the dinner after the arrival of the participants of the function in the hall, so a stampede-like situation was witnessed when a waiter appeared with a single dish in his hand. It is to be noted that the Achievement Award is a annual feature of the LCCI. In the year 2005, the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry took the initiative to recognise the services of the businessmen who are contributing to the national exchequer in a big way. This was the beginning of LCCI Achievement Awards and the response was marvellous as not only the business community but the government circles also lauded the LCCI for giving due recognition to the business community of Lahore. The LCCI Achievement Awards 2011 was the seventh function in a row. Methodology of selection was very transparent so that the right businessmen could be able to win the award. The criterion for the applicants was: Investment during the outgoing financial year, turnover during the financial year, establishment of new units during financial year. Percentage increase in export/trade turnover during the last three years, tax paid by the company or group of companies (where the contestant has more than 51pc share-holding), dividend declared to share holders during the financial year and research & Development during the year. Earlier, before the iftar dinner, the prime minister gave away the awards to the following winners: Prime Minister of Pakistan Award was received by Christan Albac, the CEO of the Telenor Pakistan; Prime Minister of Pakistan Gold Medal was achieved by Shehryar Ali Malik of Guard Auto Zone; Businessman of the year Gold Medals 2011 were received by Mian Tariq Nisar of A.T.S Synthetic (Pvt) Ltd, Iftikhar Hussain of Ishtiaq Steel and Khawaja Khawar Rashid of Lahore Esschem (Pvt) Ltd; Woman Achievement Award 2011 was achieved Mrs Rifat-un-Nisa of Khayam Publisher and Research Award (Engineering) went to Dr Zahid Ahmad Siddiqui, Professor of Civil Engineering Department (UET).
