LAHORE - As Eid-ul-Fitr is fast approaching, the shops other than clothes, bangles and artificial jewellery of major markets in city are looking deserted as inflation has marred people especially salaried-class who haven't enough money in their valets to buy essential items for the preparation of Eid. This year specially, after the rising prices of petrol and food items globally, when recession period is passing through, local markets like Hall Road, Brandreth Road, Shah Alam Market, Ichhra Bazaar, Baghbanpura Bazaar, Anarkali and Liberty Market looking deserted. Only few customers could be seen in markets where ladies and children could throng for their clothes as preparing dresses take significant time. Even the shoes merchants in the markets are sitting idle as they are hoping that they would be touched on the last week of Ramazan and when people would get their salaries. A whole sale dealer of ladies purses and other leather-related finished items in Shah Alam market Syed Abid Bukhari has said that whole Ramazan is considered to be our peak season and we in this trade usually go back homes at midnight as our products are exported to Afghanistan and Central Asian countries. But this Ramazan though we are busy enough but comparative sales are low because of insurgency in tribal and beyond areas. However, the shopkeepers of the markets where other than bangles, clothes and Eid-related stuff is being sold, have put off their credit and are promising to pay after Eid. Their problem is genuine as they have had hardly few customers to visit their shops. On the other hand, the condition of salaried persons is further aggravated as Eidul Fitr is falling in the wee days of next month and their paying masters would prefer to pay their respective employees at the closing days of the month. Hence this poor class has been affixed between the devil and the deep see. Their condition, most probably, would be more worsen when they are being denied any kind of bonus or additional benefit they usually enjoy every year before Eidul Fitr from their respective institution because of all over skyrocketing inflation and recession. There has been an increase of 40 to 60 per cent in the prices of all commodities and inflation has increased up to 35 per cent, how it is possible for the poor salaried class to cope with this susceptible situation. Five star hotels are the only place where one can see families are thronging unabatedly. This upscale class nothing to do with countrywide inflation or international recession. This class of regency has emancipated them from these bloody inflation or recession words. This omnipotent class dissipates money as tissue papers and led their lives in dalliance. The poorest class of the society proved to be salaried class who is still looking forward to their bosses for owing or extra benefit (bonus) but this year, perhaps, prosperous organizations like corporations, trusts and even multi-national companies which are considered to be generous to their employees would try to avoid in giving extra-benefits to their respective employs blaming extra burden due to inflation. Earlier, doctors community considered to be prosper group of people but these days they are also staging strong protest demonstration in which scores of doctors from city hospitals including Mayo, Ganga Ram, Jinnah, Sheikh Zayed, Children and Services pressurising government to reform their salaries structure. While on the other hand, shopkeepers, though worried for the time being, are optimistic that they would be extorting shoppers after 22nd of Ramazan as generally Eidul Fitr shopping starts from the last week of Ramazan. The shopkeepers also happy over this point when people would throng bazaars for Eid shopping they would sell their items for the prices of their own choice as no one try to higgle haggle in rush days. Most of the populations of Lahorites, especially salaried class, are of the view that this year they would not be able to make spending because of high prices of commodities including clothes, shoes and readymade garments and this year they have to spend this great festival by donning their last year's attires.
