Traders concerned over law & order situation in Karachi

KARACHI - The government should take steps to maintain law and order in the city on priority basis and ensure a conducive working environment. Karachi contributes 67 percent in national revenue and 25-35 percent of GDP, but the business community suffers a loss of Rs4b to Rs5 billion per day due to strikes. The businessmen of the city put their demanded before Syeda Shehla Raza, Deputy Speaker Sindh Assembly, during her visit to the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Saturday. Talat Mahmood, Acting President of KCCI, briefed the Deputy Speaker about the problems of business community particularly of their concern about prevailing law and order situation in city. Junaid Makda, Vice President KCCI, said that the business and industrial community should be given representation in the 31 standing committees. Business community should be recognized as the fourth pillar and needs a valid representation in legislations passed, affecting the business community. The economic wheel is run by the businessmen that help create job opportunities and contributes enormously to Government exchequer. They should be given representation in legislation and inputs taken similar to the way technocrats are taken on board. The Deputy Speaker assured the traders to lobby for legislation to ensure maximum participation of the business community in the Provincial Assemblys business relating to economic issues. The government believes in public-private partnership. We see private sector as the major player in revenue generation and development of the country, she said. The Deputy Speaker assured that Government would utilise all available options to maintain peace and security in the city.
