Traders divided over closure of markets at 8pm

KARACHI - The Cabinet committee of Sindh government on Saturday held meeting with the representatives of the trade bodies and shopping market associations. The members of Cabinet Committee Minister for Local Government Agh Siraj Durrani, MQM leader and Minister Syed Sardar Ahmed, Syed Shoib Bukhari, PPP ministers Rafiq Engineer, Mrs Shazia Marri, ANP Minister Amir Nawab and Advisor to Chief Minister on Investment Zubair Motiwala informed the traders representative about the Energy Conservation Plan and sought their help to implement it. The meeting discussed the ways of closure of markets at new schedule of 8pm announced by federal government with aim to conserve electricity. Sources privy to the meeting, said that the trader and industrialist representatives demanded that they are ready to close markets at 8pm to 9pm, if government ensure supply of electricity during trading time. Besides, the representatives of trade bodies such as Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), SITE Industrial estate, Korangi Industrial estate, Landhi Industrial estate, North Karachi Industrial estate including Siraj Qasim Telli, Shamim Ahmed, Bilal Ahmed, Siddique Memon and others representing the industries and shopping markets raised the issues facing to them. The trade leaders said that if government makes them promise of uninterruptible supply of electricity, than they are ready to shut the markets at 9pm instead the 8pm which announced by the government. A minister who was part of the meeting, on condition of anonymity told The Nation that government representatives did not give any guarantee regarding uninterruptible supply of electricity to the markets. In this regard, the government representatives assured the traders to talk with KESC administration to solve their problems. Sources said that the industrialist representatives conditionally agreed with the government plan of rotational closure of industry. However, the meeting could not reach any conclusion as traders especially market association representatives also divide over the issue as some traders were ready to give honour to government plan, but majority opposed the closing of markets at 8 pm. Though, the meeting remained inconclusive, but a minister who is part of the cabinet committee, claimed that government and traders have agreed on agreement to close the market after 9pm. The government will ensure the supply of electricity for maximum during trading hours in markets, he said. However, Chairman Karachi Traders Market Alliance Siddique Memon told The Nation that they have opposed the conservation plan, and will not accept the new schedule of closing markets at 8pm. He informed that they are going to challenge the governments plan in Sindh High Court.
