Fertilizer mafia charging Rs100 per bag extra

ISLAMABAD - Fertilizer manufacturers and traders mafia is looting farmers by charging Rs 850 or more for one bag of urea against the government announced price of Rs 750 per bag. While these money seekers are looting innocent farmers, the federal government is just sleeping and taking no action against the culprits, TheNation reliably learnt. Market sources told TheNation that this year urea fertilizer is available in the market but not at the price that the government has fixed. The reason behind this is that the present government is not capable of good governance or most of its members could have their vested or business interests. President Agri Forum Pakistan Ibrahim Mughal, while talking on the issue, said that his organisation had suggested the government to bind the urea manufacturers to print price on the bag but the authorities had turned deaf ears to the proposal. He said that by not doing so, the government has provided an opportunity to manufacturers and traders to sell the product on their own price. If the price would have been printed on the bags, it might have become harder for the traders to charge inflationary price for the product. While the locally manufactured urea fertilizer is being sold at inflationary price, imported urea is available at Rs 750 per bag and the price is printed on the bag. If the same would have been done with the local packing, it could also be available at the same price. Mughal said that imported urea cannot meet the countrys requirement and it is not available everywhere in the country so the farmers have to purchase urea on higher price. He also said that this year there is 50 percent late sowing of wheat and there is also acute shortage of water so the Ministrys 25 million tons wheat production target might not be achieved. He said that this year the purchasing power of farmers is weaker as the rice paddy price was not good in the market so the growers are already not in a position to pay inflationary prices of the inputs. He demanded that the government must force the manufacturers to print price tags on the bag so that the farmers know the price of the product and they can also argue with the seller to provide them the product on the specified rates.
