Local, regional contents to help grow broadband

ISLAMABAD (APP) - PTA Chairman Dr Mohammed Yaseen Thursday called for shifting maximum focus on the development of local and regional contents which could help grow broadband manifold. He was addressing the participants of a seminar titled Promoting ICT Sector: Enabling Information Based Society held here by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in collaboration with Motorolla. Dr Yaseen said the government was planning to connect the country with China and Central Asian states through cable while another operator would also join the telecom market through cable to compete PTCL. Pakistani telecom marker today is one of the cheapest service providers across the globe. However, we have to add education, innovation and ICT usage for our broadband consumers, he added. He said telecom solutions are needed for the redressal of grievances of the telecom services consumers while value addition and regional content was missing. Academia and market players should join hands to meet the market demands so as new and innovative solutions and content could be developed. In this regard, Research and Development (R&D) sector has to play a lead role in collaboration with academia, universities and the students besides telecom operators, he added. President of Mobilink Rashid Khan said his company was working vigorously to bridge gaps between different stakeholders of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Mobilink launched Polio Eradication Campaign, provision of School Bags and Text Books to IDPs children. Besides, we have also introduced SMS Literacy Programmes and other students facilitation services. Moreover Students Development Workshops were conducted in numerous universities, he added.
