Monsoon rains to cast negative impact on crops

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The widespread monsoon rains occurred during last three days will cast negative impact on agriculture sector damaging crops. Chief Meteorologist, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Ghulam Rasool told APP that above normal rains have been recorded across the country during July which will be harmful for the crops. Although the intermittent rains started from July 26 has filled water reservoirs and help overcome water shortage but will be harmful for cotton, chilli and tomato crops, he said. Indicating chances of pests attack on cotton crop, he said excessive water in chilli and tomato fields can also damage them as both are very sensitive crops. However, rice and sugarcane crop may survive if the rain water did not stay long in the fields, he added. Ghulam Rasool said that the met office had already issued agriculture advisory for the farmers of Sukkur and Khairpur districts of Sindh to protect date crop. While, he said sometimes farmers do not follow the advisory and have to bear big losses.
