LAHORE (APP) - Construction work on all the three sites of 969 MW Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project including intake, power house, drilling of the adit and head-race tunnels was in full swing. This was told in a meeting presided over by WAPDA Chairman Shakil Durrani at WAPDA House here Tuesday. The meeting was also attended by Member (Water) Syed Raghib Abbas Shah, Member (Power) Fazal Ahmed Khan, Member (Finance) Chaudhry Abdul Qadeer and Neelum Jhelum Hydroelectric Project GM Hasnain Afzal. Speaking on the occasion, the Wapda Chairman expressed satisfaction that the total finances amounting to $ 2.16b required for completion of Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project including foreign as well as local components had already been arranged. In view of world-wide economic recession, financial arrangements for such a mega project is, indeed, a great success of the present govt, which put in concerted efforts in this regard, he added. He revealed that WAPDA is actively considering use of state of the art tunnel boring machine for completion of Neelum-Jhelum Project earlier than its schedule. He further said that completion of the project is very vital to overcome the electricity crisis and for the economic development of the country. The meeting was told that Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric project will generate about 5.15b units of electricity annually, while benefits of the project have been estimated at Rs 30b per annum.
