ISLAMABAD - A high-level meeting of senior party leaders discussed on Wednesday the Karachi law and order situation in the backdrop of Muttahida Qoumi Movement Quaid Altaf Hussain’s arrest in London and it was decided that as the matter was of legal nature so it should be tackled accordingly.
It was further decided that the government would extend all sort of assistance to Altaf for which on the direction of Prime Minister Foreign Office has already extended request for consular level access to Altaf Hussain and sought details of charges on the basis of which he was arrested.
Sources aware of the deliberations of the meeting which was held under the chair of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif it was decided that as Altaf Hussain is a Pakistani national and a chief of a political party so he would be provided with all sort of legal help by the Government of Pakistan in this difficult time.
It was further decided in the meeting that unnecessary statements about Altaf Hussain’s arrest should be avoided and in this connection the party leaders and MPs were given clear-cut instruction not to comment on the matter and only the government and party spokespersons would comment on the subject if and when required and that too with the prior approval of the Prime Minister, the sources in the government informed.
Federal Interior Minister Ch. Nisar Ali Khan briefed the participants of the meeting about his interaction with the bosses of law enforcement agencies in Karachi and the measures they were taking to provide security to lives and properties of the citizens.
He also mentioned his telephonic contact with Governor Sindh Dr. Ishratul Ibad and his assurance on maintenance of law and order to him on Tuesday when the MQM Quaid was rounded up.
The sources confirmed that the letter seeking consular access to Altaf Hussain was handed over to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London by the Pakistan High Commissioner to UK and as soon as the reply on it would come their officials in London would meet him and would provide him with all sort of assistance he would be needing in connection with his pending case.
The meeting expressed its resolve that they would stand by the workers, leaders and Parliamentarians of MQM in this difficult time and would provide them with all sort of support they require on part of government. But at the same time made it loud and clear that no one would be allowed to take law in hand and peace in the financial hub of the country and other big cities of Sindh would be maintained at all costs.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister and Interior Minister spoke to Sindh Governor and inquired after the health of MQM chief.
According to the official spokesman both Premier and Interior Minister assured Ibaad full support on the matter relating to Hussain’s arrest and his ill health.
