ISLAMABAD - Former president and military dictator Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf, who was arrested in Lal Masjid pogrom case by Aabpara Police on Thursday evening, was adamant to stay back to fight out all the criminal cases against him and refused to fly out of the country.
Sources in All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) informed that the party chief was in no mood to leave the country and wanted to go though the legal mills to get himself exonerated in all the pending criminal cases against him. Even after getting bail from apex court on Thursday morning in Nawab Akbar Bugti murder case, the last one pending against him by that time, and become a free man but while talking to his counsel and party leaders he made it clear that he would not run away and face the trial in all the pending cases.
Sources further informed that government was worried about the security threats to former president Gen(Retd) Pervez Musharraf and as he had refused to leave the country even after getting bail in the last pending case against him on Thursday, the government was left with no choice but to implicate him in another case so that the extraordinary security provided to him at his Chak Shahzad farmhouse could be justified. Otherwise after getting bail in all the pending cases Gen(Retd) Musharraf lose the entitlement of high-profile security given to him while in state custody.
Besides Islamabad Police officials right now some 1200 Rangers were deployed on his security, which guarded his farmhouse in Chak Shahzad round-the-clock keeping in view the serious threats to his life from Taliban who have placed him on the top of their target list.
Sources in APML said that Gen(Retd) Pervez Musharraf have his personal guards as well but even then keeping in view the threats to his life the government has taken extraordinary measures for his security and he was holed up in his farmhouse.
Sources in the party further said that there were tacit indications to their party chief from certain quarters to move out of the country after getting bail in all the pending cases against him, but he (Musharraf) had flatly refused the offer and made it loud and clear that he would not flee the country and would stay back to fight the cases against him.
Party sources further said that Gen(Retd) Musharraf wanted such an arrangement for his departure abroad that he could keep a corridor open for his return and that would only be possible when he would go through the legal course in all the pending cases against him.
The party sources commenting on his re-arrest in Lal Masjid carnage case said that he would also be getting bail in this case as well because Gen(Retd) Musharraf had no direct role in it and like the other cases he would also get bail in this fragile case against him.
It is pertinent to mention here that Gen.(retd) Pervez Musharraf was already granted bail in Benazir murder case, judges detention case and Nawaz Akbar Bugti case while an inquiry in Ministry of Interior regarding the Nov. 3, 2007 Emergency imposed by him is also pending.
A senior party leader on condition of anonymity said that Gen (Retd) Pervez Musharraf do want to visit abroad to see his ailing mother and meet family and friends there, but strictly refuted the impression that he would leave the country under some covert deal with the rulers.
