KARACHI - Withdrawing its demand to delay the polls for March, the PPP’s Sindh government has surrendered before the Election Commission of Pakistan and announced to hold the local government elections on January 18.
A meeting of the ministerial committee on preparations of local body polls was held at the CM Secretariat on Friday. It has come up with a conclusion to follow the schedule of the polls to be announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan for next month on January 18. Sindh Minister for Information, Archives and Local Government Sharjeel Memon while talking to the media persons said the Sindh government was ready to conduct the local bodies polls on January 18 because the government did not want any confrontation with any institution. The forthcoming LB polls would be held on party basis for the first time in the history of the province. The government had been actively engaged in preparations for smooth and successful holding of the LB polls, he added.
Memon said it would be the responsibility of the ECP to ensure provisioning of magnetic ink and flawless enlistment of the voters in the voters’ list.
The minister said the Sindh government just wanted that the contestants could get appropriate time regarding their preparations.
He said the government would take all measures to hold the LB polls in a free, fair and transparent manner. The polls would be held on party basis so the government would play its dynamic role for successful holding of the elections. He hoped the ECP would fulfill its constitutional obligations diligently.
