LHC issues contempt notices to SSP Operations, 2 cops

LAHORE -

The Lahore High Court on Thursday reproached SSP (Operations) Lahore issuing contempt notices to him and his two subordinates for arresting son of a widow in violation of the court orders.
The court was hearing a contempt petition moved by Salima Bibi who sought action against SSP (Operations) Rana Abdul Jabbar, Sabzazar SHO Atif Manj, Incharge Investigation of Gulberg Muhammad Ashfaq and Sub-Inspector Rana Rasheed of Gulberg PS.
On September 29 and October 22 last year, the court had restrained the Lahore police not to arrest any other son of the widow whose five sons were killed in allegedly fake encounters. The court had also directed the SSP to probe into the matter of the widow’s house in Sabzazar, which was got vacated by police and then handed over to another person namely Ghulam Hussain.
On Thursday, counsels of the widow told the court the SSP instead of probing the matter, ordered to arrest her son namely Malik Rizwan in an old case registered with Gulberg police against some unidentified persons. They submitted police had already killed her five sons namely Imran, Jamshed, Awais, Zahid and Majid in fake encounters and a judicial inquiry was also available on the court record. Now, the police wanted to kill her sixth son, they alleged. On court query, the SSP who was present in the court admitted that he had ordered to arrest Malik Rizwan because he was wanted in some cases.
At this, the court admonished him for violating the court orders and remarked no one would be allowed to disgrace courts. The court also observed in it order that the SSP and other police officers deliberately disobeyed the orders. The court issued contempt notices to all police officers including the SSP and directed them to file reply till May 17 (today). The court directed the petitioner’s counsel to file a bail application for securing release of Malik Rizwan.
