Penelope, Monica turn bag designers

MADRID: In a fine example of sisters doing it for themselves, Spanish actress Penelope Cruz and sibling Monica have created ‘The Cruz’ collection for luxury label Loewe. The Cruz sisters certainly don’t like to do things by halves; when Penelope teamed up with her sister Monica to model clothes for Mango, the siblings ended up designing their own range. The same thing happened with Agent Provocateur when Monica was hired to model its lingerie; their diffusion line, L’Agent, will be launched in August. And now history is repeating itself with Loewe. The luxury Spanish label, which hired 39-year-old Penelope to front its ad campaigns for the next three years, has collaborated with the star and her sister on a new line. Working with outgoing creative director Stuart Vevers, the result is The Cruz, a cross-body bag with outside pockets designed for women on the go. “We wanted to do something special but also practical, and we wanted the design to have an unmistakable Spanish element,” Cruz told WWD. “We usually like the same things” Penelope explained. “When we do the design meetings separately, we tend to choose the same materials and colours.”–TG
