15 killed, 50 injured in train mishap in northern India

At least 15 people were killed and 50 others injured in a train mishap in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh Tuesday, local media reported Wednesday. The mishap happened when a thousand aspirants for police jobs, sitting on the rooftops of a speeding train, were squashed by a low overbridge near Shahjahanpur, some 130 km from state capital Lucknow, said The Times of India. The aspirants traveling on the rooftops were returning from a police recruitment rally in Bareilly that was canceled at the last moment. Following the train mishap, a mob torched a coach that was next to the second class compartment on which the victims were perched at the time of the accident, the report said.
