BJP revives Hindutva themes in poll manifesto

NEW DELHI (Agencies) - Indias hardline Hindu nationalist party - the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) - on Friday revived its pet Hindutva themes of rebuilding Ram Temple over the remains of a razed mosque in Ayodhya in northern India and abrogation of Article 370 giving special status to Occupied Kashmir as it released its manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The desecration of the Babri Masjid in December 1992 by Hindu zealots had triggered some of the worst Hindu-Muslim sectarian clashes since partition of the Sub-Continent in 1947. The party manifesto pledged to remove all illegal immigrants residing in the country and complete the fencing of the India-Bangladesh border. It also promised to curb foreign funds for outfits promoting separatist ideologies and get back black money stashed in tax havens. The main Opposition BJP positioned itself as the guardian of national security and appealing to its Hindu nationalist base. With the start of polling just two weeks away, the BJP promised a slew of populist measures, including special loans and pensions to farmers and subsidised rice for those living below the poverty line. The most worrisome issue before us today is national security, said the partys official candidate for prime minister, Lal Krishna Advani. Good governance, development and security, these summarise our promises, said the 81-year-old former home minister. The BJP governed at the head of a coalition between 1998 and 2004 before being ousted by a Congress-led alliance in 2004 elections. Slamming the Congress governments track record on terrorism as a nightmare, the BJP manifesto highlighted recent attacks on Indian soil, including a series of bombings in New Delhi and Novembers terrorist assault on the financial capital Mumbai. Never before has India been seen so helpless in the face of terror, the manifesto said. The BJP vowed coercive measures to deal with countries promoting cross-border terrorism, to expel all illegal immigrants living in India and to revive tough anti-terror legislation that was repealed by the Congress. The BJP will send out a simple message ... to terrorists and their sponsors. They will have to pay a heavy price for each innocent life lost, the manifesto said. Advani dismissed as farcical illusion the idea of a Third Front govt and said the tussle is between BJP-led NDA and Congress, which is losing its allies. There is no scope for a Third Front government, which does not have the support of BJP or Congress. It is a farcical illusion in the minds of people, he told reporters at the manifesto-release function. Taking a dig at Congress, the BJPs prime ministerial candidate said he sympathised with Congress which is facing a sad situation. This was because after the Left parties abandoned it, the Samajwadi Party has also parted company so also Lalu Prasads RJD and Ram Vilas Paswans LJP, besides PMK, and earlier the TRS had left it, he said. A senior Congress minister dismissed the BJPs vision as parochial and without value. This manifesto is a reflection of the fact that they have lost their way. They will never be in tune with India, Science and Technology minister Kapil Sibal said. They have no issue today, neither economic nor social. Therefore, they are again talking of the Ram temple, he added.
