Lack of sporting culture, facilities cause of Pakistan's poor show

SINGAPORE - The Pakistan contingent chef de mission Naveed Akram Cheema praised the efforts of the young players in this first-ever Asian Youth Games and vowed to get some bounty for the bronze winning athlete Rahim Khan. Talking to this scribe on the sidelines of the inaugural Asian Youth Games, Cheema said that the games were good for exposure of the young athletes. "Things have not been as we expected in sailing and table tennis but the youngsters still did well and somehow we have bronze medal. Some of participating teams are top sporting nations," he added. There was a rest day in sailing on Thursday and races in remaining categories will start from today. "In the earlier races, Pakistan sailors were doing well but after an erroneous leap in one of the races they struggled to recover," he added. "The point is that our players did not have such facilities back home and here in Singapore, the sporting venues are of international standard at every locality and they did not have to do much to make the arrangements. Without that kind of venues we cannot match countries like China, Korea, Japan and Singapore," he said. Talking about China, which is leading the table with a total of 27 medals including 17 gold medals, he said: "If we had half of the facilities in Pakistan, we would have made won a lot a of every field," he added. Cheema further said that the athletics event has concluded and the batch will return on July 6 while the remaining participating players will fly at the end of their events. However, Cheema was all praise for Rahim and promised to get encouraging reward for the athlete at the government level. He said other players need encouragement and good facilities at home to produce good results. "The awareness is growing now. The realisation is there among all the sections of society and with dedication things would change," he added. After their loss in the table tennis team event, the Pakistan players performance was the same in the mixed doubles when they lost to Thailand 3-0. Tabish Khurshid and Abeera Ali went in for the match against Thais but their inexperience at this level made them beat the dust yet again. And there was not a single moment they had disturbed the Thai pair consisting S. Tanapol and Thongsub Laksika. S. Tanapol and Thongsub Laksika beat Khurshid Tabish (PAK) and Sheikh Abeera Ali 3-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-6). The Pakistan players will be up for another three matches during the day today and similarly the Pakistan swimmers will also be splashing in the water. At the medals table, China is followed by Korea with 25 medals with seven golds. But Singapore has been upstaged by India at number three position with five gold medals, three silver and two bronze. Followed by Japan and Thailand with 10 medals each while Singapore is at number six with 13 medals in which four are gold.
