British soldier in Germany held over nail bomb

LONDON : British authorities arrested a soldier at a base in Germany under terrorism laws after a suspected nail bomb was found in northwest England, police and reports said Wednesday.
The man was held on Monday at an army base in Paderborn, Germany, British media reported, following what police said was the discovery of the device at a house in Salford, Greater Manchester, on November 28.
Army bomb disposal experts were brought in to make the device safe, reports said.
“A 19-year-old man was on Monday 2 December 2013 arrested on suspicion of Section 57 of the Terrorism Act. He has now been bailed until January,” Greater Manchester Police said in a statement. A police spokesman confirmed to AFP that the man was a soldier.
A 20-year-old man was also arrested at the Salford house on suspicion of possession of abusive images, police said. Reports in British media said extreme right-wing leaflets were also discovered.
An Army spokeswoman said they could “confirm that an individual has been arrested on charges linked to the discovery of a suspicious device in Salford.”
The spokeswoman said it would be “inappropriate to comment further during the ongoing investigation.”
Reports said the soldier was flown back to Britain for interrogation before being bailed.
