PARIS (AFP) - A French writer has filed a complaint alleging that former IMF boss and leading politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn attempted to rape her about eight years ago, her lawyer said Tuesday. In a one word note, David Koubbi "confirmed" to AFP he had sent a complaint by his client, 32-year-old Tristane Banon, to Paris prosecutors who under French law will now decide whether to launch a criminal inquiry. Special Correspondent adds: US prosecutors plan to drop sexual assault-related charges against former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, an investigator said. The top investigator said prosecutors will agree to drop the charges either at Strauss-Kahn's next court date in two weeks or sooner, The New York Post reported Tuesday. "We all know this case is not sustainable," the source told the Post Monday. The creditability of the hotel housekeeper who accused Strauss-Kahn of sexually assaulting her in May "is so bad now, we know we cannot sustain a case with her," the Post's source was quoted assaying. "She is not to be believed in anything that comes out of her mouth -- which is a shame, because now we may never know what happened in that hotel room." Prosecutors said Friday they had issues with the woman's credibility, agreeing to allow Strauss-Kahn to be released on his own recognizance. The woman's attorney accused Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance of being afraid of losing a high-profile case and said his client was being made a sacrificial lamb. "Did [Strauss-Kahn] use force? Was there actually a crime?" the source said to the Post. "I don't think we'll ever know." Defence sources offered a situation in which Strauss-Kahn admitted to a consensual sex-for-money exchange with the maid in his Sofitel suite, with no force involved and she turned against him when he refused pay, the Post reported. "In the past, guests have left stuff for her," one source close to the defence investigation said. "She goes back to look for the money" and is disappointed, the source said. In Paris, Strauss-Kahn faces a second complaint alleging attempted rape, this time from a French writer who plans to sue, her lawyer said. Journalist and novelist Tristane Banon, 32, claims Strauss-Kahn tried to rape her during a February 2002 interview. Strauss-Kahn's lawyers said her accusations were "imaginary" and they planned to countersue her for defamation. In an interview with the French magazine L'Express, Ms. Banon said seeing a freed Strauss-Kahn "eating in a luxury restaurant with friends made me ill."
