MCB alarmed at mosque attack

LONDON (APP) - The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) has slammed the arson attack on the Islamic Centre in Luton saying that the incident is another sad reminder of the Islam phobia in Britain. According to the Police, the attack of Masjid-al-Ghuarabba caused considerable damage to the community centre that also provides educational facilities to children and women. Commenting on the incident, MCB Secretary General Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari said: Although the investigation is still ongoing into this shocking crime, we cannot ignore the clear correlation between the rise of Islam phobia with the rise of extremist far right groups in Britain. He urged the Muslim community to take active part in the forthcoming European Parliamentary Elections on June 4 to keep out far right organisation like British National Party. Our complacency may unwittingly open the doors to racist and xenophobic parties like the BNP, who only fuel hatred and extremism in our country, to slip into power. While commending the local Bedfordshire Police for its swift action so far, MCB expressed hope that they will apprehend the perpetrators swiftly and bring them to justice. The suspected arson attack followed a number of threats the mosque has received from suspected far right groups in recent weeks. The MCB called on all such centres, mosques, businesses and schools that cater for Muslims to re-evaluate their security measures in cooperation with the police to safeguard against possible attacks.
