US suspects father pleads innocence

DENVER, Colorado, (AFP) - The father of an Afghan immigrant accused of conspiring to bomb New York around the anniversary of 9/11 pleaded not guilty on Friday to lying to FBI investigators. Mohammed Zazi, father of Najibullah Zazi, who is accused of building homemade bombs from household products, was indicted by a grand jury in Denver, Colorado. He was accused of making a false statement in a matter involving international and domestic terrorism, according to the Department of Justice. If found guilty he faces eight years in prison. Zazis lawyer Ed Harris said the indictment came as no great surprise. Its a minor quantum of evidence to get an indictment, he said. Harris earlier asked for full disclosure of evidence obtained under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), arguing that the court should suppress such evidence. The FISA evidence presents a chicken and egg situation, forcing the defence to challenge the evidence by a certain deadline when it has not been turned over for review. We have not seen a shred of evidence to date, Harris told reporters after the hearing. Zazis son is being held in New York where he was indicted last month in the alleged plot. Before his September 20 arrest, Najibullah Zazi worked as an airport shuttle bus driver in Denver. Prosecutors say he had carried bomb-making instructions in a laptop and had been shopping for large quantities of chemicals found in beauty products that could have been the ingredients for explosives. They also say he received explosives training in Peshawar, hotbed of Al-Qaeda activity.
