Thailand's acting prime minister has lifted a state of emergency in Bangkok that was imposed Sept. 2 amid an ongoing political crisis. Acting Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat made the announcement Sunday after meeting with the country's army chief and other senior security officials. He said political tensions remain but they do not justify keeping the Thai capital under emergency rule. A state of emergency rule was imposed 12 days ago after violent clashes between government supporters and opponents left one person dead. Calm was quickly restored. Parliament is scheduled to meet Wednesday to choose a new prime minister after the Constitutional Court last week ordered Samak Sundaravej to resign.
