Delhi building collapse kills 32

NEW DELHI (AFP) - A four-storey building collapsed in Delhi on Monday, killing at least 32 people, the Press Trust of India news agency reported, quoting the citys health minister. More than 60 people were injured when the building in the eastern area of the city caved in and many are still feared to be trapped inside, the agency said, citing a senior police official. Delhis health minister Kiran Walia told PTI: 32 people have been killed in the incident. Rescuers helped by local residents battled to pull people from the debris of the building, surrounded by concrete slabs and rubble, PTI reported. The citys finance minister A. K. Walia told PTI the foundations of the building could have been weakened by flooding during monsoon rains. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the construction of the building would be investigated, the agency reported. The scale of the tragedy is unprecedented. I dont think such a tragedy has taken place in Delhi in the recent past, she said, in comments run by PTI. An adjoining building is also at risk of collapse, PTI said, quoting unnamed police officials.
