Hundreds of migrants feared drowned off Yemen: UN

A U.N. official said a dozen bodies washed ashore in Yemen after boats believed to be carrying about 400 African migrants capsized in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. The head of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees in Aden, Laila Nassif, said hundreds of migrants remained missing on Saturday and are feared drowned. Nassif said two boats carrying some 300 migrants capsized in the Red Sea. She said only 30 people have been rescued so far. Rescue efforts are complicated by bad weather. In another incident, a boat carrying 120 migrants capsized in the Arabian Sea and 80 made it safely to shore. Thousands of illegal migrants made the hazardous sea journey to Yemen last year, mostly to escape dire conditions in lawless Somalia.
