Turkey ranks 95th out of 162 nations on list of informal economies

Turkey has been ranked 95th in the world in terms of countries with unregistered economies, with an informal economy that accounts for 31.6 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP). As part of World Bank-funded research on informal economies around the world, researchers focused on the unregistered economies of 162 countries and analyzed what kind of trend unregistered economies followed for 1999 through 2007. According to the report, with its unregistered economy at 66.7 percent Georgia ranks at the top of the list. Switzerland and the US are the two countries with the lowest rate of unregistered economies in the world -- 8.7 and 8.8 percent, respectively. According to the results of the study, Turkey's unregistered economy was 32.8 percent in 1999 but decreased to 32.1 percent in 2000 and kept declining, dipping to 29.1 percent in 2007. For the nine-year time period, the average rate of the unregistered economy in Turkey was 31.6 percent of GDP. Turkey belongs to a group with unregistered economies at around 30 percent levels. Within this group there are 48 nations, including Brazil, Morocco, Pakistan, Libya, Kenya, Ecuador, Romania and Croatia.
