The second-in-command of the Al-Qaeda terror network, Ayman Al-Zawahiri, said in a new internet video posted Thursday that Afghanistan's attempt to negotiate with the Taliban showed weakness. The one hour, 20 minute video, posted on jihadist forums on November 27 and titled "Al-Azhar - The Lions' Den," was obtained by the US-based SITE Intelligence Group monitoring service. In the video Zawahiri claims that the US "is doomed to failure in Afghanistan and the tribal regions of Pakistan," a SITE statement read. "Zawahiri perceives Afghan President Hamid Karzai's attempt to negotiate with the Taliban as a sign of the government's weakness," according to SITE. On Pakistan, Zawahiri suggests that the government has been weakened but remains a US puppet. The Al-Qaeda number two also attacks Egypt for "being corrupt and not looking out for the interests of its people," and blasts the renown Cairo-based Al-Azhar Islamic schools "as having been corrupted and not following true Islam."On Iraq, Zawahiri believes that US gains are temporary, claiming that Iraq's Shiite-majority administration will not accept the US-funded Sunni militias -- locally known as Sahwa, or Awakening -- into the government. In the video Zawahiri "defends Al-Qaeda's reputation of killing innocent civilians in their attacks, maintaining that such disparaging reports are merely the propaganda of the West," SITE said."Furthermore, Zawahiri argues that the United States kills innocent civilians themselves when targeting mujahideen." Zawahiri also claims that US economic weakness is due to the September 11, 2001 attacks in the US "and the wars it is waging against Muslims."In the video Zawahiri, who appears dressed in white, "offers his support for the jihadist media, which he sees as fundamental to make sure that people receive information unfiltered from the mujahideen and not from Western sources."He makes no reference to the November 26 Mumbai terror attacks, SITE said.
