Israeli airplanes fire 10 missiles into Gaza

Israeli warplanes fired 10 missiles into the Gaza Strip at dawn Saturday, targeting the abandoned airport in the coastal enclave's southern end and a metal workshop in Gaza City, witnesses and security sources said. F16 fighters dropped nine bombs at the airport in Rafah city, completely destroying the few partly-damaged structures that remained standing, the witnesses said. An Israeli army spokesman told Xinhua the airport, which was shut down at the beginning of the Intifada in 2000, was targeted because militants from Hamas use it to dig underground tunnels towards the nearby Gaza-Israel border. Meanwhile, a rocket fired from an Israeli military helicopter hit a metal workshop in southeast Gaza City, witnesses said. There have been no reports on casualties in the two airstrikes.
