Fresh explosions, intense gunfire at besieged Taj Hotel

An intense gunbattle raged at the Taj Mahal Hotel here on Saturday morning as commandos closed in on terrorists holed up in the heritage structure, whose ground floor caught fire after a series of explosions. After a brief lull overnight, the gunbattle resumed at around 3:40 a.m. at the 565-room hotel, where five huge explosions were heard in a span of 30 minutes amid intermittent firing from the first and ground floors of the building. At least one terrorist was still inside the hotel. In what could be a decisive battle to end the 60-hour-long siege, heavy firing began at around 8 a.m. with huge plumes of smoke coming out of the first floor of the hotel. The Marine commandos (Marcos) have surrounded the Taj where NSG personnel were carrying out the operation to flush out the terrorists. Multiple rounds of automatic gunfire and blasts from inside the building shattered several hours of relative calm.
