Wimbledon and Serena greet leopard-skin queen

LONDON  - Serena Williams is rarely upstaged in the fashion stakes on a tennis court but the former Wimbledon champion admits she has met her match in fellow American Bethanie Mattek, the leopard-skin queen. Williams has caught the eye at Wimbledon with the white trenchcoat she wears during the pre-match warm-up, while Maria Sharapova's tuxedo top and shorts combo attracted plenty of attention. But even they would think twice about some of the outfits worn by Mattek. The blonde 23-year-old from Florida drew gasps from the notoriously staid Centre Court crowd at Wimbledon when she wore knee-high soccer-style socks in 2006. Just a few months later she was back in the spotlight at the US Open, with a leopard-skin outfit earning the headlines. Even when a ballboy was snapped taking a cheeky peak down her plunging neckline, Mattek laughed it off. Williams has always followed her own style and respects Mattek's determination to do her own thing. "They were unusual, but I really appreciated her courage," Williams said. "Her personality is so good and the courage you have to wear something like that in fashion goes a long way." When Williams and Mattek walk onto court for their fourth round match on Monday, there will be plenty of spectators eager to catch a glimpse of the fashion icons. After all, Mattek will be playing in the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time so it would be easy for such a flamboyant personality to try to seize the spotlight. But the world number 69, who is also playing doubles with India's Sania Mirza here, has a surprise in store for the watching world; she plans to keep it low-key for her high-profile clash because she wants to be known for the quality of her tennis rather than couture. "I really wanted to have my tennis come through. That's why I'm kind of toning down some of my outfits for this tournament," Mattek said. "I've got in trouble with it. I think every tournament somebody said something bad about it. I've shocked some people and then I'll come out wearing something preppy and I've shocked more people doing that. "It's not that I didn't take my career serious, or even myself. I'm still outgoing, like to show my personality."It's something that's fun for me. Off the court, I'm the same way. I like to dress really funky and creative." Even if Mattek is bowing to Wimbledon's tradition of playing in all-white attire, fans of her outrageous outfits, including some in the locker room, will be pleased to hear she will never completely subdue her natural instinct to stand out from the crowd."I get players coming up to me and they're all disappointed in me. I'm like, Guys You know, it's still something I like to do," she said. "I still have a bunch of outfits. I have a clothing sponsor now. It's just that right now I'm focusing on my tennis."
