Pakistani woman slashes hubby over violation of religious beliefs

NEW YORK - A devout Pakistani woman forced by her husband to eat pork, wear short skirts and drink alcohol slashed his neck with a kitchen knife as he slept, according to a media reports. Rabia Sarwar, 37, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and was freed on 25,000 dollars bail. She told police in a written statement that she was emotionally abused by her husband, Seikh Naseem, 41, and forced to violate her religious beliefs. He made me do so many things that are against Islam, she wrote in a statement to police. I did all that just to make him happy but inside me there was a war, she continued. Naseem, a 41-year-old high school math teacher who goes by the name Eddie, said he woke up with the knife to his neck and as he wrestled with his wife - whom he wed five months ago in an arranged marriage - for the weapon. He begged her to consider his two children from a previous marriage. She just screamed, 'They are going to be orphans now he said. She kept on coming after me with the knife and I grabbed it and broke it into two pieces and ran out of the room. He then realised that Sarwar had hidden all the phones, so he ran into the hall and pounded on a neighbours door for help. Police were called, and Rabia was arrested. Naseem suffered only surface wounds to his neck, face and hands and was later released from a local hospital. Naseem - who was born in Pakistan, but is half Norwegian and is a Unitarian - said he moved to the US more than 20 years ago and quickly adapted to American culture, taking to drinking casually and developing a taste for barbecued ribs. I did my best to cut his throat, Rabia Sarwar wrote. But the next moment he jumped on me and grabbed me. Rabias lawyer, Joe Licitra, said she had previously been treated for depression. Her husband told the New York Post that Sarwar was having a hard time adjusting to American culture. After they were married five months ago, she discovered that he had previously dated mostly white women, had been married before and liked to go out to drink, she wrote. He was not religious, though he claimed to be a devout Muslim, and he often yelled and cursed her family, she said. And one of his favourite writers was Salman Rushdie, a controversial author. He hates Pakistan and he hates Pakistanis then why did he marry a Pakistani girl? she wrote. They fought about her leaving, and he threatened to hurt her family, saying they would have to pay him 30,000 dollars or he would sue them and leave them penniless and homeless, she wrote. Her family is in Pakistan. She lay in bed that evening thinking her only way out was to kill him, she wrote. Rabia also pleaded not guilty Thursday to second-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Her next court date is on Monday.
