Secretary ECP resigns over Waheeda Shah's slapping of polling staff

Secretary Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan has decided to resign from his post and has sent his resignation to the Chief Election Commissioner on Thursday.
Talking to media outside Supreme Court after the apex court adjourned hearing of Waheeda Shah case here on Friday, Ishtiaq Ahmed said that ECP has failed to provide security to election commission staff and his post was a burden on him and he has informed the government regarding his decision.
He said he has decided to resign from his post. “The extension in my contract was a burden on me and due to this I have decided to resign,” he added.
Regarding the Waheeda Shah case, he said misbehaviour with polling staff could lead to three months imprisonment under summary trail. He said summary trail of Waheeda Shah would be held at ECP Karachi office today (Saturday).

He said that the police failed to provide security to polling staff and not registered a case against Waheeda Shah in time.
Ishtiaq Ahmed further said that the court has rejected the apology of Waheeda Shah and she might be sentenced for three months after the summary trial.
He said that the ECP had earlier withheld the result of by-election for PS-53, the constituency where the incident took place. A case had also been registered against Waheeda Shah on the directives of the Election Commission.
