ISLAMABAD - Police officials investigating the high profile case of failed car bomb attack revealed on Tuesday that the accused had planned to attack sensitive installations in Islamabad through remote-controlled small-sized aircraft.
“The accused revealed they had planned to attack sensitive areas including Naval/Air headquarters situated in Islamabad,” a source quoting a member of police team investigating the case told The Nation on Tuesday. He, however, said that each of three remote-controlled small aircraft, which were recovered from houses of accused during raids, had a capacity of carrying 1-kg explosive.
It is important to mention here that law enforcement agencies had foiled terrorism bid on 30 August last. They had taken into custody an explosive-laden car and averted attack at a sensitive installation in Islamabad. It was an effort of a joint team consisting of criminal investigation department (CID), intelligence agencies and police. Teams had recovered a heavy quantity of detonated explosive material packed in a car from a house in Bhara Kahu last month. Police had arrested the accused who are under trial at present.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, Islamabad police claimed to have nabbed 677 absconders involved in crime of heinous nature during current year in its special crackdown against outlaws, a police spokesman said. According to a press note issued from office of the IGP, Sikandar Hayat assigned the task to all police officials to ensure arrest of proclaimed offenders and inform his office on the daily basis about success in this special crackdown.
In compliance of these directions, SSP Islamabad Muhammad Rizwan directed all heads of police stations of Islamabad to start their renewed efforts to arrest outlaws. A total of 677 absconders including 305 proclaimed offenders and 372 court absconders have been apprehended during current year.
According to details, City Zone arrested 91 proclaimed offenders and 99 court absconders while Saddar Zone apprehended 120 proclaimed offenders and 150 courts absconders.
Similarly, Industrial Area Zone nabbed 43 proclaimed offenders, 56 court absconders while Rural Zone nabbed 50 proclaimed offenders and 67 court absconders during this period.
Meanwhile Islamabad Police have arrested 190 culprits involved in immoral activities including 106 men and 84 women.
IGP Islamabad Sikandar Hayat has issued directions to make this campaign further effective as the performance of police stations in-charges would be further reviewed soon in this regard.
He said that no one is above the law and arrest of those being at large after their involvement in crimes of heinous nature should be ensured for the safety to the lives and property of the citizens. He warned the police officials that sluggish attitude in this regard would not be tolerated. IGP Sikandar vowed to continue efforts for effective policing and make police department service-oriented in real manner.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, traders of Islamabad awarded an inspector of Islamabad police with gold medal as a token to acknowledge his efforts in recovering a businessman from custody of terrorists.
