Interior Ministry directs agencies to arrange for tight security blanket

ISLAMABAD - The Interior Ministry has directed to the Punjab and Sindh police officers to provide foolproof security to the foreign teams during the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, which will be played from September 12 to 28 at Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi. It has been learnt through a source in the ministry that the National Intelligence and Operation Committee (NIOC) met to discuss the security arrangements during the Champions Trophy. Additional Secretary of Interior Ministry Qazi Imtaz, Director Event of Pakistan Cricket Board (PSB) Ahmed Farooq and top police officers from Punjab and Sindh attended the meeting. The security consultant of the International Cricket Council Nicholas Stein was briefed about the security plan ahead of the ICC Task Force visit to Pakistan. The house showed its satisfaction over the security arrangements that were made during the Asia Cup that was played at Lahore and Karachi in May and June last. Besides hosts Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, United Arabs Emirates (UAE) and Hong Kong participated in the regional showpiece. On this occasion, Qazi Imtaz briefed the ICC security consultant and assured to implement strict security system for the touring teams. "Foolproof security will be provided during the championship in all the three hosts cities," he told Stein. The source further said that the Interior Ministry also asked their subordinates to analyse the security measures, which were taken during the Asia Cup and improve it further and remove all loopholes if they find any. It is pertinent to mention here that defending champions Australia and New Zealand are yet to make up their mind in sending their teams to Pakistan to participate in the second top most event of the cricket after World Cup.
