Kaleem Omar remembered as a gifted poet

ISLAMABAD - Kaleem Omar was a prominent poet of English language and played a significant role in promoting culture of this region in his poems, Prof Dr Alamgir Hashmi said this while presiding over a condolence reference in the memory of prominent journalist, columnist and English poet. Noted writer Ejaz Rahim was the chief guest on the occasion. In his presidential speech, Prof Hashmi said that Kaleem Omar had deep interest in different forms of Fine Arts like music and painting along with poetry. His contribution to literature and journalism will always be remembered, he said. According to Hashmi, Kaleem as a poet made remarkable contribution to Pakistans cultural life in different forms of expression and social discourse. He will be remembered through his writings, poems, which have a recurring appeal in our poetic landscape. As a journalist his columns were equally remarkable, he said. The tone and overall character of his columns could contain both valuable information and pointed message. He found balance between the expression of private conscience and public voice. Khalid Iqbal Yasir said that Kaleem Omar never cared for his promotion rather he promoted others keeping himself behind the scene. Omar made valuable contribution to literature, journalism and Pakistani culture. Prof Mubeena Talat, Head of English Department, International Islamic University, said that Kaleem Omar was one of the founding fathers of Pakistani English poetry and his works should be researched and reviewed. Azhar Masood said that he got chance to work with Kaleem Omar who was a talented colleague. Jonaid Iqbal said that Kaleem Omar was a committed journalist and had perfect command over English language. Khurram Khiraam Siddiqui said that Kaleem Omar was an epoch-making poet and journalist. He edited a book consisting of the English poems by Pakistani Poets that was published by Oxford University Press in 1971. His poetry has political themes prominent in them. He had excellent command over current affairs, sports, culture and almost every important subject.
